Why is New York City called Big Apple ?
Only a few people know what the origin of this nickname is, so you (my faithful websurfers) will be part of those who can sham by telling how New York City became the Big Apple.
Actually, this term appeared in the 20's and 30's with the jazz bands. The fashion expression was: "There are a lot of apples in the trees, but when you tear off New York City, you pick off the Big Apple". This is the first explanation. The second one, the one I like the most, is the following. The jazz bands nickname an apple a city where they have never gone and played because of the stage fright (when you are frightened, you feel a bowl in the
throat as if an apple was blocked). in this case, to come and play in New York was a huge stage fright, the BIG apple.
